The deadline for applications for ASPT Graduate Student Research Grants is March 6, 2015. 

Graduate student research grants support fieldwork, herbarium travel, and/or laboratory research in any area of plant systematics. Both master's and doctoral students are encouraged to apply.  Every year we present 10-15 of these awards to promising young scientists. Please go to the ASPT website or use this link to access the application instructions.

Two Postdoc Positions Available for computational phylogenetics and molecular evolution

Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available in the computational evolutionary biology lab of Jeremy M. Brown at Louisiana State University. Research in the Brown lab is broadly centered on the use of phylogenetic approaches to understand organismal history and molecular evolution.
Position 1 is part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation to develop and apply a suite of related statistical approaches for assessing the fit of stochastic models to sequence and trait data. The Brown lab is collaborating extensively on this project with the lab of Bob Thomson at the University of Hawaii – Manoa, as well as the developers of RevBayes and the authors of various R packages.
Position 2 is not tied to a specific project, but research connected to other areas of active inquiry in the Brown lab will be strongly preferred. These areas include the development of new techniques for extracting information from large collections of phylogenetic trees, the exploration of new models and priors for Bayesian phylogenetics, and the investigation of genome-wide phylogenetic and evolutionary patterns.

2012 Research Grants for Graduate Students

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists is pleased to announce the Society’s annual competition for research grants for graduate student investigators.  Support is available for both masters and doctoral students to conduct fieldwork, herbarium studies, and/or laboratory research in any area of plant systematics.  No award will exceed $1000, and it is unlikely that proposals from previous recipients will be funded.  Proposals will be funded on the basis of merit, regardless of the research area within systematics.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Society’s Awards and Honors Committee and must include the following:

1. Curriculum vitae;
2. Proposal (the text, including figures but excluding literature cited, should not exceed two single-spaced pages) that describes the research to be conducted, emphasizing the role the grant funds will play;
3. Itemized budget.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be members of ASPT at the time of the application deadline.  Details regarding ASPT membership can be found at the ASPT homepage (http://www.aspt.net/index.php).

Beca para Tesis Doctoral en filogenia de crustáceos decápodos ibéricos

Propuesta de beca/contrato para realizacion de Tesis Doctoral - Puerto Real

El proyecto de investigación: “Aplicación de técnicas morfológicas y moleculares en la identificación de estados larvarios planctónicos de crustáceos decápodos ibéricos”(CGL2009-11225) ha sido financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Plan Nacional I+D+I), y se desarrollará de enero de 2010 a diciembre de 2012. En el contexto de este proyecto se oferta la posibilidad de solicitar una beca/contrato FPI para realizar una Tesis Doctoral.  
El objetivo principal de este proyecto es optimizar la aplicación de técnicas moleculares, en concreto el análisis de secuencias de ADN mitocondrial, conjuntamente con técnicas morfológicas, para facilitar la correcta identificación de las megalopas de los braquiuros ibéricos colectadas en el plancton y, posteriormente, poder realizar descripciones detalladas de la morfología de las mismas. Las nuevas descripciones junto con las ya existentes permitirán elaborar una clave ilustrada, dirigida a investigadores y técnicos, que facilite la correcta identificación de estos organismos tan importantes en las poblaciones planctónicas. Así mismo se realizarán estudios de filogenia molecular en los taxa (superfamilias, familias o géneros) que están bien representados en la Península Ibérica, y de los que ya existen datos para especies de otras áreas. Esto ayudará a conocer las relaciones filogenéticas, y en su caso modificar la sistemática, de algunos grupos hasta ahora poco estudiados, así como revisar la validez taxonómica de algunas especies. 
La realización de esta Tesis Doctoral implicará el uso tanto de técnicas tradicionales en taxonomía y filogenia (estudio de los caracteres morfológicos de adultos y larvas), como el de técnicas moleculares, particularmente el análisis de secuencias de ADN mitocondrial. Será necesario realizar periódicamente trabajo de campo, colecta de larvas en el plancton, así como trabajo diario de laboratorio. 

Se busca por tanto un/una candidat@ con licenciatura en Biología o Ciencias del Mar, con fuerte motivación por la investigación científica. Con disponibilidad para viajar tanto por España como por el extranjero, e incluso realizar estancias breves en Centros de Investigación de otros países.Se valorará un buen nivel de inglés (hablado y escrito), conocimientos previos de fundamentos de taxonomía y filogenia, experiencia previa de laboratorio en técnicas moleculares básicas, posesión de carnets de conducir y de buceador, y habilidad para el dibujo.

WWF’s Education for Nature Program is pleased to announce the availability of Russell E. Train Fellowships for students from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Tanzania, and Timor Leste who are pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in conservation-related fields.

Train Fellowships provide up to two years of support for education-related costs including tuition and fees, room and board, books, travel, and research. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of a participating country and must have at least two years’ experience in conservation. Applicants must have applied to, have been accepted to, or be currently enrolled in a conservation-related degree program at an accredited institution of higher education.
Applications for students from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru are due by January 31, 2010.

Applications from Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, and Timor Leste are due by February 28, 2010.

SUMMARY:

This position is a two year appointment starting approximately July 1, 2010, involving both research in our molecular genetic laboratory and in situ field work focused on the biodiversity of Madagascar, including lemurs, carnivores, geckos, chameleons, boas, turtles and tortoises populations endemic to the island.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The scientist will employ molecular genetic techniques in the laboratory to generate species-specific microsatellites, multi-locus genotypes and DNA sequence files. The incumbent will also be responsible to apply advanced statistical methods, computer science skills and bioinformatics principles to highlight the dynamics of population genetics and systematics. The candidate’s ability for independent and critical thinking and excellent English writing skills will be vital in the writing of grants and publishable manuscripts. Excellent interpersonal skills will be key, especially in relation to our cross-cultural field research teams in Madagascar.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent opportunity available for a motivated and experienced Ph.D. in the genetics, molecular biology, or cell biology fields, with a strong publication record and outstanding professional references. Emphasis in conservation science or informatics experience is a plus. Qualified candidates must show proficiency in molecular genetic techniques and computer skills capable to generate necessary data and to perform genotype and sequence analysis. The position will require attention to detail, good communication skills, strong skills in experimental design and troubleshooting, an ability to work independently and as part of a team, and dedication to doing the best job possible.

Recordatorio para la III Conferencia Internacional del Código de Barras de la Vida. Mexico

A los posibles interesados,

Del 7 al 13 de noviembre se llevará a cabo la Tercera Conferencia Intenacional del Código de Barras de la Vida en la ciudad de México.

Esta Conferencia va a reunir líderes nacionales e internacionales en diferentes campos de la biología (taxonomía, ecología, conservación, manejo, especies invasoras, plagas, etc) interesados en el desarrollo de esta nueva heramienta molecular para la identificación expedita de especies, y sus aplicaciones.

La parte científica más importante de la Conferencia se llevará a cabo en las instalaciones de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias del 10 al 12 de noviembre, pero también se tienen preparadas reuniones o talleres previos a la misma en las instalaciones de la UNAM del 7 al 9  de noviembre, y eventos abiertos al público el 13 de noviembre en el Museo Universum.

Esta Conferencia está siendo organizada por el Instituto de Biología de la UNAM y por el Consorcio para el Código de Barras de la Vida, basado en Smithsonian Institution. Toda la información sobre la Conferencia se puede consultar en la pagina web www.dnabarcodes2009.org.

The Research Councils are launching a new funding scheme for research in systematics and taxonomy. The Systematics and Taxonomy (SynTax) scheme is designed to provide short-term funding for preliminary research that will form the basis of novel responsive mode proposals with a substantial systematics/taxonomy component.

The scheme aims to stimulate high quality taxonomy and systematics-related research proposals to the UK’s Research Councils.

The scheme follows on from the Collaborative Systematics (CoSyst) scheme, through which a number of projects have gone on to receive responsive mode funding.

The launch event will provide details of the SynTax scheme and will showcase successful projects funded under its predecessor CoSyst.

Tea will be served in the library from 5.30pm and the lecture will be followed by a wine reception and poster session.

Convocatoria para hacer Codigos de ADN, Mexico

Se ha dado a conocer en México la convocatoria del CONACYT para la "Integración de las Redes Temáticas CONACYT de Investigación 2009".
La convocatoria esta dirigida a investigadores, tecnólogos, empresarios y demás personas interesadas en participar en alguna de las Redes Temáticas CONACYT de Investigación. Estará vigente hasta el 18 de septiembre de 2009.

El objeto de esta convocatoria es:

"Promover la incorporación de investigadores y personas interesadas en la conformación de las Redes Temáticas y fortalecer la construcción y desarrollo de las mismas, entre los grupos de investigación científica y tecnológica en las instituciones de educación superior, en los centros de investigación, empresas y/o laboratorios nacionales de todo el país, en áreas estratégicas para alcanzar soluciones articuladas y estructuradas que contribuyan al desarrollo nacional y al bienestar de su población en las áreas temáticas que el Consejo Asesor de Redes Temáticas ha aprobado."

Relevante para nuestra comunidad es el párrafo tres de la Convocatoria:

"Código de Barras de la Vida: Biología Molecular y Sistemática; Generación de códigos de barras de ADN para las especies de plantas, animales y hongos; Códigos de barras de las colecciones biológicas y herbarios; Aplicaciones de los códigos de barras para el reconocimiento de especies que sirven como marcadores biológicos, parásiots y plagas; Aplicación de los códigos de barras en especies de interés económico y en conservación de la biodiversidad; Reconocimiento de los ámbitos de distribución de las especies utilizando los códigos de barras; Códigos de barras para reconocer la ontogenia de especies con metamorfosis; Uso de los códigos de barras para la explotación sustentable de especies; etc."

El financiamiento ofrecido incluye:

a) Estancias académicas para investigadores y estudiantes incluidas en el Programa General de Trabajo establecido y justificado
b) Gastos para el desarrollo de trabajos de campo, para el diagnóstico del tema.
c) Gastos de organización de eventos académicos sobre el tema y que contemplen la formación de Recursos Humanos (Simposio, escuelas, talleres etc.).
d) Gastos de los investigadores (viáticos y pasajes).
e) Becarios.
f) Gastos relacionados con las reuniones de los miembros de la Red Temática.
g) Pago de servicios profesionales externos o de apoyo consultivo.
h) Ediciones e impresiones de libros para divulgación de los resultados, relacionados a la línea temática de la Red Temática.
i) Operación y mantenimiento de un portal y páginas informativas incluyendo las bases de datos.
j) Trámites para el registro de la propiedad intelectual a nivel nacional y/o internacional, derivados del proyecto de la Red Temática. Los costos de las patentes y su mantenimiento deberán ser cubiertos por la institución que tenga la titularidad de esos derechos.
k) En casos excepcionales se dará a poyo para adquisición de infraestructura

2009 Travel Grants for Students

The ASPT is happy to announce a new grant program focused on increasing student participation at the annual meeting. The grants may be used to pay for travel, meeting registration, lodging, and/or food expenses associated with attendance at the annual meeting. Each applicant must be an active member of ASPT and may be an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in plant systematics (graduate students) or at least seriously interested in plant systematics (undergraduates). Up to 20 awards of $300 will be made in 2009.

The ASPT Membership Committee will use a lottery to select grant recipients, allowing at least 14 grants for students planning to present papers at the meeting, with the remainder (up to 6) going to those who will not be presenting. Grant recipients will be notified prior to the deadline for abstract submission and will pick up their checks at the ASPT banquet. Each recipient will also be awarded a free ticket to the banquet.

Completed applications should be received by Lynn Clark, chair of the ASPT Membership committee, by March 10, 2009. Please note that the application requires the signature of the student´s advisor to confirm that the individual is an active student, is seriously interested in plant systematics, and would benefit from attendance at the 2009 annual ASPT meeting. 9. The total amount to be awarded is: US$10,000.
10. The maximum individual award is US$1,000.
