OSU workshop on phylogenetic methods. Columbus

The Ohio State University, as an extension of the successful workshops sponsored by the Willi Hennig Society, will conduct a workshop on phylogenetic methods.
Columbus, Ohio,
July 13-17, 2009.

The purpose is to provide further instruction and experience to students who already have some familiarity with phylogenetic analysis. The format is a series of lectures and laboratory sessions that will give students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the logic of the phylogenetic method, parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches, tree search strategies, measures of support, DNA alignment, morphological character coding, weighting, analysis of multiple and large data sets, consensus and character hypothesis testing.

Lecturers are expected to include

• Gonzalo Giribet (Harvard University),
• Kevin Nixon (Cornell University),
• Ward Wheeler (American Museum of Natural History), and
• John Wenzel (Ohio State University).

The software used for the course will include TNT, POY, RaxML, and MrBayes, and will be distributed with a course packet and workbook.

Participation is limited to 20 students. Cost for the workshop, including one week of lodging, is $1200, but each student will receive a $600 fellowship paid directly to the workshop. Thus the student will be responsible for only a workshop cost of $600, the cost of transportation to and from the Ohio State campus, and meals. Lodging for the period of July 12 through 17 is included in the cost of the workshop, and will be provided adjacent to campus, consisting of modest apartments with a kitchenette.

Taller Latinoamericano de Evolución Molecular

Estimados amigos y colegas filogenetistas,

me complace anunciarles la celebración del "Taller Latinoamericano de Evolución Molecular" que tendrá lugar en las instalaciones del Centro de Ciencias Genómicas y de la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas del Campus Morelos (Cuernavaca, México) de la UNAM, del 22 de Junio al 3 de Julio de 2009.

Se trata de un Taller intensivo pero totalmente GRATUITO dirigido a alumnos de posgrado e investigadores de la UNAM, que cubrirá desde aspecto bioinformáticos tales como búsqueda de secuencias homólogas en bases de datos públicas, parseo de archivos de secuencias con Perl y alineamiento múltiple de las mismas, hasta métodos de inferencia filogenética (distancias, parsimonia, máxima verosimilitud, inferencia bayesiana), de evolución molecular (fechación de clados, selección a nivel molecular) y de genética de poblaciones.

Contaremos además con la participación de dos destacados investigadores extranjeros, el Dr. Scott V. Edwards (Harvard University) y la Dra. Catherine Lozupone (University of Colorado at Boulder).

Podrán inscribirse al curso alumnos de doctorado de cualquiera de los Programas de Posgrado de la UNAM o de otras instituciones nacionales o extranjeras. Este taller permitirá a los alumnos/as de programas de posgrado de la UNAM obtener los créditos equivalentes a un curso fundamental. Asímismo podrán inscribirse investigadores mexicanos o de cualquier otra nacionalidad, siempre y cuando puedan demostrar que tengan conocimientos básicos del área. Se expedirá un certificado de asistencia a todos los participantes.
