The XVIII International Botanical Congress held in Melbourne, Australia this July [1], a gathering of more than 2000 plant scientists from 73 nations, witnessed exciting developments in the field of plant taxonomy. At the meeting, a resolution was passed with a large majority to enable new taxonomic names to be published electronically and their accompanying descriptions and diagnoses to be published in English or Latin rather than the obligatory Latin description [2]. These are truly ground sweeping changes to the 'International Code of Botanical Nomenclature' [3] henceforth to be known as the 'International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants', and brings 'the Code' bang up to date in the 21st Century.

CONVOCATORIA AL "PREMIO CINVESTAV" a las mejores tesis de licenciatura y maestría

En el marco de la celebración del cincuenta aniversario del Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN, Cinvestav, y con el fin de fortalecer sus vínculos académicos con las Instituciones de Educación Superior Públicas y Privadas, este Centro convoca a los estudiantes graduados a participar en el “Premio Cinvestav” a las mejores tesis de Licenciatura y Maestría. Esta convocatoria es una nueva iniciativa que se abrirá anualmente.

El objetivo es reconocer a aquellos estudiantes que eligieron la opción de tesis para obtener su título o grado y fomentar así el interés por la investigación científica, tecnológica o educativa. Son elegibles aquellas tesis cuya defensa se haya realizado en una institución pública o privada con sede en la República Mexicana, en el periodo comprendido entre el 1 de septiembre de 2010 y el 30 de agosto de 2011.

La fecha de cierre el 30 de septiembre. Es importante señalar que se otorgará un estímulo económico a las tesis ganadoras y una constancia de participación a los autores de las tesis inscritas.

IAPT Research Grants in Plant Systematics 2012

The IAPT announces a competitive grants program in plant systematics, with emphasis on funding students and young investigators in developing countries, but open to applicants world-wide. The program is based on the submission of research projects, taking into consideration the following guidelines:
1. The grant application period is open until 31 December 2011.
2. The award should be preferably used for supporting field work, travel to institutions, or laboratory investigations.
3. General information should be always included on the front page (complete name of the applicant, country, institution, project title, academic degree, telephone, fax and e-mail).
4. The projects should include brief ideas of an introduction, materials, methods, objectives, literature citation and other relevant information, especially noting if any other financial support for the project exists.
5. The length of the proposals should not exceed three pages.
6. In the case of Ph.D. students, in addition to the proposal, two recommendation letters should be included.
7. The projects are to be submitted to:
