USO DE TECNICAS MOLECULARES EN SISTEMATICA Y GENÉTICA DE POBLACIONES

OBJETIVOS

1. Conocer los principios, aplicaciones y limitaciones de las técnicas moleculares en Sistemática y en Genética de Poblaciones.
2. Conocer criterios que permitan seleccionar los marcadores más adecuados para resolver problemas taxonómicos a diferentes niveles (intra e inter-específico, a nivel de género y taxones superiores).
3. Recibir entrenamiento en la utilización de nuevas herramientas para el análisis de la biodiversidad, teniendo en cuenta la historia evolutiva de poblaciones y de especies.
4. Comprender el uso de diferentes programas de computación corrientemente utilizados para el análisis de datos.

PROGRAMA
1. Toma y conservación de muestras para la aplicación de diferentes técnicas. Manejo del laboratorio de Biología Molecular. Preparación y esterilizado de material. Práctica de pipeteo con micropipetas automáticas.
2. Fundamento de los métodos de extracción de ADN. Aislamiento de ADN de tejidos animales y vegetales.
3. Conceptos teóricos sobre la amplificación de segmentos de ADN mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR).
4. Amplificación por PCR utilizando cebadores específicos: a) amplificación del gen citocromo b del ADN mitocondrial de especies del género Oligoryzomys (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae); b) amplificación de loci microsatélites (genoma nuclear) de especies de Calomys (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).
5. Conceptos teóricos sobre la amplificación por PCR utilizando cebadores arbitrarios: RAPDs, ISSR, AFLP. Amplificación de fragmentos ISSR en Myrcianthes cisplatensis (mato).
6. Polimorfismo de longitud de fragmentos de restricción (RFLP): conceptos teóricos y análisis de geles. Digestión del gen cit b de varias especies de roedores sigmodontinos con enzimas de restricción.
7. Secuenciamiento. Alineación de secuencias.
8. Métodos de análisis. Tratamiento de los distintos tipos de datos. Construcción de matrices. Uso de programas como PAUP, Mr Bayes, jModeltest, Arlequin, Genalex y Structure.

2012 Research Grants for Graduate Students

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists is pleased to announce the Society’s annual competition for research grants for graduate student investigators.  Support is available for both masters and doctoral students to conduct fieldwork, herbarium studies, and/or laboratory research in any area of plant systematics.  No award will exceed $1000, and it is unlikely that proposals from previous recipients will be funded.  Proposals will be funded on the basis of merit, regardless of the research area within systematics.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Society’s Awards and Honors Committee and must include the following:

1. Curriculum vitae;
2. Proposal (the text, including figures but excluding literature cited, should not exceed two single-spaced pages) that describes the research to be conducted, emphasizing the role the grant funds will play;
3. Itemized budget.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be members of ASPT at the time of the application deadline.  Details regarding ASPT membership can be found at the ASPT homepage (http://www.aspt.net/index.php).
Proposal submission:  Proposal materials must be submitted electronically as pdf files. Items 1-3 above should be submitted as a single document.  Use the following format for the filename for the proposal materials:

6th Biennial Conference of the International Biogeography Society. 2013

First announcement

Registration, abstract submission for symposia and contributed papers will open in July 2012.

The core of the meeting will be four successive symposia on broad foundational and cutting-edge topics and approaches in biogeography and macroecology, each with a suite of leading international scientists as well as openings for contributed papers.
- Beyond Bergmann: New perspectives on the biogeography of traits
- Island Biogeography: new syntheses
- Predicting species and biodiversity in a warmer world: are we doing a good job?
- Conservation paleobiology: using knowledge of past ecosystems to inform conservation priorities
