As EDIT approaches its final year, we hope to engage in a practical discussion of what taxonomy and taxonomists achieve when working together in EDIT. We will discuss the transformation of taxonomy into a global cyberscience, with speakers inside and outside EDIT defining a picture of a discipline that experiences growing relevance and capability. As in previous editions, all EDIT institutions will be able to send a number of delegates to this event.

Recordatorio para la III Conferencia Internacional del Código de Barras de la Vida. Mexico

Fecha limite para registro con descuento en la Tercera Conferencia Internacional del Código de Barras de la Vida

A los posibles interesados,

Del 7 al 13 de noviembre se llevará a cabo la Tercera Conferencia Intenacional del Código de Barras de la Vida en la ciudad de México.

Esta Conferencia va a reunir líderes nacionales e internacionales en diferentes campos de la biología (taxonomía, ecología, conservación, manejo, especies invasoras, plagas, etc) interesados en el desarrollo de esta nueva heramienta molecular para la identificación expedita de especies, y sus aplicaciones.

La parte científica más importante de la Conferencia se llevará a cabo en las instalaciones de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias del 10 al 12 de noviembre, pero también se tienen preparadas reuniones o talleres previos a la misma en las instalaciones de la UNAM del 7 al 9  de noviembre, y eventos abiertos al público el 13 de noviembre en el Museo Universum.

Esta Conferencia está siendo organizada por el Instituto de Biología de la UNAM y por el Consorcio para el Código de Barras de la Vida, basado en Smithsonian Institution. Toda la información sobre la Conferencia se puede consultar en la pagina web www.dnabarcodes2009.org.

Es importante notar que el día de mañana es el último día para inscribirse al evento con una cuota de descuento. Para los organizadores es de suma importancia conocer el número de personas interesadas en asistir, para todos los arreglos logísticos de la Conferencia, por lo que los invitamos a inscribirse lo antes posible si están interesados en participar, por otro lado, el cupo en la Conferencia conforme se acerque la fecha podría estar limitado.

Systematics and taxonomy research scheme launch event

The Research Councils are launching a new funding scheme for research in systematics and taxonomy. The Systematics and Taxonomy (SynTax) scheme is designed to provide short-term funding for preliminary research that will form the basis of novel responsive mode proposals with a substantial systematics/taxonomy component.

The scheme aims to stimulate high quality taxonomy and systematics-related research proposals to the UK’s Research Councils.

The scheme follows on from the Collaborative Systematics (CoSyst) scheme, through which a number of projects have gone on to receive responsive mode funding.

Programme

The launch event will provide details of the SynTax scheme and will showcase successful projects funded under its predecessor CoSyst.

Tea will be served in the library from 5.30pm and the lecture will be followed by a wine reception and poster session.

El Simposio que se propone a continuación se ofrece por primera vez para el sureste del país e incluye una diversidad de enfoques novedosos. Este Simposio permitirá difundir algunos de los conocimientos que se tienen del manejo y uso de datos moleculares en el conocimiento de la biodiversidad con énfasis en plantas vasculares, hongos y virus. Se pretende dar a conocer las áreas de investigación de los ponentes y establecer posibles proyectos de colaboración con la institución receptora ya sea tanto de estudiantes como de la comunidad científica en general.

Objetivos

• -Dar a conocer la importancia de los análisis moleculares en el estudio de la biodiversidad con énfasis en plantas vasculares, hongos y virus.
• -Presentar avances sobresalientes relacionados al manejo de secuencias de ADN que son el fundamento de los proyectos de Código de barras.
• -Establecer el interés en estudiantes e investigadores sobre el impacto del uso y manejo de los datos moleculares.
• -Establecer colaboraciones científicas con proyectos relacionados al tema del simposio con investigadores o estudiantes.

NGS2009 Conference on Next Generation Sequencing: Challenges and Opportunities

So far, most DNA sequences have been obtained with Sanger capillary technology. However, next generation sequencers (NGS) or ultrasequencers are revolutionizing genetics and hence biology since 2005. It is not just a dramatic increase in sequencing speed; it means a change in paradigm that obliges researchers and institutions alike. It is also a tremendous and passionate technological race worth millions.

This conference will focus on the computational and statistical challenges that pose NGS data. These aspects are often neglected, yet are important to successful research. While wet lab prices are steadily decreasing, bioinformatics and statistical analyses have become a serious bottleneck for traditional molecular laboratories.

We have broadly organized the conference around two focal points: technology and applications. The first part will embrace bioinformatics, statistical and computational problems. The second will raise some of the most emblematic areas where NGS has exerted a dramatic influence.

Evolution Symposium at Stony Brook: Darwin09

Darwin 2009: 150 Years of Evolutionary Biology

On November 4-8 2009, the Department of Ecology & Evolution at Stony Brook University will celebrate the 150^th anniversary of Darwin’s “The Origin of Species” by hosting a four-day meeting where leading evolutionary biologists will lecture and help lead discussions on the
current status and future of the study evolutionary biology. We will have three stimulating days of keynote addresses, evening panels and discussion groups, and ample opportunity for communication on the important issues of the present and future of evolutionary biology. All
lectures will be in modern and pleasant facilities at Stony Brook University, with available nearby lodging and convenient transportation to the meeting site.

Serie de Seminarios: “Frontiers in Genomics”

El Centro de Ciencias Genómicas y el Instituto de Biotecnología, en conjunto con la Licenciatura en Ciencias Genómicas y la Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencias Genómicas se complacen en invitar a la comunidad académica a la Serie de Seminarios: “Frontiers in Genomics” mismos que se impartirán los lunes a las 4:30 pm de Febrero a Mayo de 2009, por colegas invitados del extranjero expertos en distintas áreas de la genómica, tales como bioinformática, genómica funcional, genómica evolutiva, genómica humana, genómica bacteriana, análisis computacional y experimental, genómica comparativa, estadística y tecnología.

Estos seminarios permitirán a los interesados adentrarse en la investigación de frontera que se realiza en el mundo en ciencias genómicas.

Las pláticas se llevarán a cabo de manera presencial en Cuernavaca, en el Auditorio "Dr. Guillermo Soberón" del Centro de Ciencias Genómicas, o en el Auditorio del Instituto de Biotecnología, UNAM Campus Morelos.
