En nombre de las instituciones organizadoras, me es grato extenderles una invitación especial a participar en el III Congreso Colombiano de Zoología que se llevará a cabo en la ciudad de Medellín - Antioquia, del 21 al 26 de noviembre de 2010.
Motivados por el hecho de pertenecer a un país que ostenta un lugar privilegiado, al ser depositario de gran parte de la riqueza natural de nuestro planeta, este evento estará enfocado en compartir los avances en el conocimiento de los diferentes tópicos de la diversidad animal y en dimensionar la importancia de los servicios ambientales que ésta nos ofrece, especialmente sobre el impacto al que se enfrenta la humanidad con la alteración del equilibrio natural, incluyendo los efectos del cambio climático global. Siendo coherentes con este reto en el congreso hemos decidido minimizar el impacto ambiental de su desarrollo mediante la utilización de medios digitales informáticos a todo nivel y durante las diferentes fases del Evento.

Overview
BOTANY 2010 will be held at Providence, Rhode Island, July 31 – August 4, 2010.

Societies participating in BOTANY 2010 will include:

• the American Bryological and Lichenological Society (ABLS),
• the American Fern Society (AFS),
• the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT), and
• the Botanical Society of America (BSA).

In preparation for Botany 2010 we are now soliciting proposals for symposia, colloquia, workshops, discussion sessions, and field trips. Symposia are organized around a topic of potential broad interest, are timely because of recent advances or synthesis in the field, or are particularly relevant to the conference venue. Colloquia are organized around more specialized topics with all presentations adhering to the standard 15 minute timeframe. The number of presentations in a colloquium is variable. Discussion sessions (“roundtable discussion”) are organized around a particular topic of interest with the bulk of the time devoted to discussion that engages the audience. Workshops are distinguished from symposia and colloquia by the inclusion of time devoted to hands-on activities (e.g., software demonstrations, data analysis tutorials, etc.).

Recordatorio para la III Conferencia Internacional del Código de Barras de la Vida. Mexico

Fecha limite para registro con descuento en la Tercera Conferencia Internacional del Código de Barras de la Vida

A los posibles interesados,

Del 7 al 13 de noviembre se llevará a cabo la Tercera Conferencia Intenacional del Código de Barras de la Vida en la ciudad de México.

Esta Conferencia va a reunir líderes nacionales e internacionales en diferentes campos de la biología (taxonomía, ecología, conservación, manejo, especies invasoras, plagas, etc) interesados en el desarrollo de esta nueva heramienta molecular para la identificación expedita de especies, y sus aplicaciones.

La parte científica más importante de la Conferencia se llevará a cabo en las instalaciones de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias del 10 al 12 de noviembre, pero también se tienen preparadas reuniones o talleres previos a la misma en las instalaciones de la UNAM del 7 al 9  de noviembre, y eventos abiertos al público el 13 de noviembre en el Museo Universum.

Esta Conferencia está siendo organizada por el Instituto de Biología de la UNAM y por el Consorcio para el Código de Barras de la Vida, basado en Smithsonian Institution. Toda la información sobre la Conferencia se puede consultar en la pagina web www.dnabarcodes2009.org.

Es importante notar que el día de mañana es el último día para inscribirse al evento con una cuota de descuento. Para los organizadores es de suma importancia conocer el número de personas interesadas en asistir, para todos los arreglos logísticos de la Conferencia, por lo que los invitamos a inscribirse lo antes posible si están interesados en participar, por otro lado, el cupo en la Conferencia conforme se acerque la fecha podría estar limitado.

4th Dresden Meeting on Insect Phylogeny,

The Dresden Meetings on Insect Phylogeny are dedicated to a broad variety of topics concerning phylogeny reconstruction in Insecta; this includes both the interordinal and intraordinal levels, both morphological and molecular work, and both extant and fossil taxa, as well as occasional methodological contributions. The 4th Dresden Meeting on Insect Phylogeny (2009) will have a strong focus on key taxa and key characters insects; this will also include some presentations on fossil key taxa. The about 30 oral contributions, all in English, will be presented by invited high-profile specialists.

NGS2009 Conference on Next Generation Sequencing: Challenges and Opportunities
Barcelona (Spain),

So far, most DNA sequences have been obtained with Sanger capillary technology. However, next generation sequencers (NGS) or ultrasequencers are revolutionizing genetics and hence biology since 2005. It is not just a dramatic increase in sequencing speed; it means a change in paradigm that obliges researchers and institutions alike. It is also a tremendous and passionate technological race worth millions.

This conference will focus on the computational and statistical challenges that pose NGS data. These aspects are often neglected, yet are important to successful research. While wet lab prices are steadily decreasing, bioinformatics and statistical analyses have become a serious bottleneck for traditional molecular laboratories.

We have broadly organized the conference around two focal points: technology and applications. The first part will embrace bioinformatics, statistical and computational problems. The second will raise some of the most emblematic areas where NGS has exerted a dramatic influence.

An international multidisciplinary meeting focusing on the history and biological diversity (past, present and future) of SE Asia.
This will be a three-day multidisciplinary meeting to discuss this important region with an emphasis on reporting new ideas and exchanging views between a wide range of Earth and Life Scientists. It will promote interaction between Earth and Life Scientists working in the region. The programme will include plenary sessions, overview presentations, and breakouts for specialist groups. We seek contributions on all geological and biological aspects of the Southeast Asian Gateway, the region including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indochina, New Guinea and the NW Shelf of Australia.
